The capital of Catalonia is wonderful to explore with RV. There are some very nice campsites in and around the city, some of which are even directly on the Mediterranean Sea.
Geographically, Barcelona is located near the French border in close proximity to the Pyrenees. The city is very popular for its beauty and attracts more than seven million tourists every year. More than 1.6 million people live in the city itself, making Barcelona one of the most densely populated metropolises in Europe.
Barcelona is known for its high quality of life and has a very good price-performance ratio. The city has a rich history. At Plaça Nova you can admire the remains of a Roman aqueduct and ancient Roman tombs.
Many of the religious buildings date back to the time of Christ and are still very well preserved. Barcelona also has very modern buildings and a large shopping mall. The sea, the historic buildings and the exclusive shopping opportunities make Barcelona a varied destination.
Catalonia's Mediterranean weather ensures a hot summer and a mild winter in the city. The best time to travel for a beach holiday is from July to September, when the average temperature is around 30 degrees Celsius. The spring months are good for an active holiday with RV.
The coolest month is January, with temperatures ranging from 5 to 14 degrees. The nights are therefore too fresh for a pleasant stay in RV. The season begins in May, when the thermometer no longer falls below 10 degrees. During the day, 20 degrees Celsius are possible. From June onwards it gets really warm in Catalonia, the ideal time for a summer holiday on the beach. In November, the season draws to a close. At Christmas, temperatures range from 6 to 14 degrees.
Barcelona is a dry region all year round. You never have to count on much rain. Especially in summer there is a long dry spell. In June it rains only two days a month. In spring, autumn and winter there is a little more rain than in summer, but there are no more than 6 rainy days.
The metropolis has so much to offer that it keeps you busy for days. You are, as they say, spoilt for choice. But these are the sights that no visitor to Barcelona should miss:
This Roman Catholic church is the most famous building in the city. The famous artist Antoni Gaudí designed this extraordinary sacred building. To date, the building has not been completed, although the foundation stone was laid in 1882.
The plan was to complete the building on the 100th anniversary of Gaudí's death, but it doesn't look like that will happen. It was inaugurated by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010. The building is located in the old town and is easy to reach.
This park is also closely associated with Antoni Gaudí. Eusebi Güell commissioned this park from the artist in 1900. Gaudí designed an English garden with over 60 villas. Due to a lack of space - only two plots could be bought - only 3 of the 60 planned houses were actually built.
One house was home to the client's family, the second house was temporarily occupied by the artist, and the third building was a school. Nowadays, there is a museum in the artist's residence. Numerous prints are exhibited here.
In addition to the ornate decorations, the organic shapes are a trademark of Gaudí's art. The numerous mosaics come from the waste of a nearby ceramics factory. Admission to the park is now chargeable, as there were too many visitors at times.
Montjuïc is one of the city's mountains. The view from the 173 m high hill is fantastic. If you want to enjoy the panorama, you can reach the mountain by two cable cars.
In 1929, one of the famous World's Fairs was held here. In 1992, the mountain was a venue for the Summer Olympics. The multi-level water wall is particularly impressive.
The cosmopolitan city has a variety of beautiful facilities to offer that rent out pitches for the RV.
One of the best RV sites is Camping 3 Estrellas. You can rent the pitch for your camper van in different categories. Some of the pitches have a direct view of the sea.
The pitches are very spacious, even very large campers have enough room here. The evening sunsets by the sea are particularly beautiful. The bus stop from where the buses go to the city centre is only a few metres away from the site.
In addition to the reception, there is a well-equipped shop on the premises. Fresh baguettes are available there every morning. The prices are a little more expensive than in a normal supermarket.
The sanitary facilities are very well maintained and clean. Washing machines are also available.
This site is also highly recommended, it is clean and modern. There are shuttle buses from the site to the city, so the RV can stay on the pitch.
Cheap tickets for many sights are available at the reception. There are cheap ACSI pitches, but they offer enough space for RV with an awning. For very large campers, it is worth renting a regular pitch.
The site is also in a good location for visiting Barcelona. The washrooms are a bit older, but clean and tidy. There is a stage for washing the RV, this is rarely seen.
The bus ride does not take long and costs less than three euros. The beach is easily accessible on foot. The promenade is a popular cycle route. Bikes can be rented in Barcelona from Barcelona E-Bike Rent, among others.
El Prat de Llobregat is Barcelona's airport. However, there are two other airports 120 km away that offer a transfer service to the city. All three airports have regular flights from Germany.
Barcelona-Sants station is located in the centre of Barcelona. The journey from Germany takes about 20 hours. There are usually seven trains a day.
Barcelona is easy to reach by car from Germany. The journey takes over 13 hours, as the distance is about 1400 km. So a nightly stopover is worthwhile.
A trip to Barcelona with RV is definitely worthwhile. The city itself has remarkable buildings, parks and shopping opportunities to offer. The campsites in the city are well suited for RV and are modern. Some of the sites are even right by the sea.
