Hanau lies in the lovely valley of the Kinzig, which flows into the Main in the middle of the city. The Kinzig valley captivates with its harmonious landscape and lends itself to being explored by RV. Just a few kilometres outside the city, visitors are surrounded by soothing natural beauty in harmonious balance. Hanau's surroundings invite you to rent an RV and relax in a cozy camper van.
Although Hanau is better known as an industrial and commercial centre, the city has a surprising amount of sights and activities to offer its guests. Historical sights, monuments, museums, beautiful parks and interesting guided tours await visitors on a holiday in Hanau, as well as an excellent range of restaurants and parking spaces for RVs.
Hanau is divided into several districts. In addition to the city centre, there is the directly adjacent district of Kesselstadt, and on the other side of the Main are Steinheim and Klein-Auheim, which is connected to Großauheim by a bridge over the Main. A little further out is Mittelbuchen and the district of Wolfgang is also surrounded by a green belt.
Not far from the town is the Bärensee, a popular bathing lake, which has a well-kept campsite with sites for mobile homes. Only a few kilometres away is the Kinzigsee, a reservoir created decades ago. Here, too you will find a large campsite where guests with RVs are welcome.
Camping accessories and spare parts for the RV are also provided; in the surrounding towns such as Maintal, Bruchköbel or Langenselbold there are several relevant shops for the RV and its equipment. If you are thinking of renting an RV in Hanau, you will find several options in the surrounding area.
There is plenty to discover on a holiday in Hanau with an RV. However, many destinations are located in the city centre and are not necessarily easy to reach by campervan. It is a good idea to rent a bicycle to explore the city centre.
The city's most famous sons are Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, better known as the Brothers Grimm, who were born in 1785 and 1786 and achieved world fame with their publications. The collection of children's and household fairy tales, was also active by linguists and is among the founding fathers of German studies. Their birthplace stood on what was then Paradeplatz, now Freiheitsplatz, in the heart of the city. Not far from the site of the brothers' birthplace, which was destroyed in the Second World War, there is now a larger-than-life Brothers Grimm monument on the market square.
Hanau scores with numerous museums, for example, the historical museum housed in the enchanting Schloss Philippsruhe, which allows you to dream on the outskirts of the bustling city on the banks of the Main. Also housed in Philippsruhe Palace is the hands-on museum of the Brothers Grimm, which has something new and exciting in store for young and old alike.
Visits to the German Goldsmiths' House at Alter Markt and the Hessian Doll and Toy Museum in Hanau-Wilhelmsbad are particularly interesting. The former spa complex is worth a visit in itself, and a walk in the beautiful park with its famous historic horse-drawn carousel is a balm for the soul.
Hanau has a lot to offer in terms of art and culture. Every summer, the Brothers Grimm Festival takes place, lasting several weeks and delighting many visitors. But there's also a feel-good program. The RV is allowed to rest while its drivers are pampered in the House of Wellness or visit the salt grotto in the wellness centre. Not to be forgotten are the excellent restaurants, atmospheric wine taverns and cozy pubs that Hanau scores with.
The town of the Brothers Grimm is also known as the gateway to the Spessart. We recommend renting an RV in Hanau and taking a closer look around the legendary Spessart. A special treat for romantic minds is located about 60 kilometres southeast of the city and is easy to reach by campervan: the fairytale castle of Mespelbrunn. The moated castle is forest romance turned to stone and served as an enchanting film set in the endearing film "Das Wirtshaus im Spessart".
But there are also interesting excursion destinations in a north-easterly direction for which it is worth renting an RV. First and foremost is the impressive Ronneburg Castle, which has been rising on the steep basalt cone for centuries and can be seen from afar. It is one of the best-preserved Staufer castles and regularly hosts well-attended medieval events.
If you would like to experience even more medieval flair, simply drive up the Kinzig valley in a camper van or rental car, which can be rented at many stations in Hanau. The charming town of Gelnhausen is the first stop before continuing on to Büdingen. Both towns have an unspoilt historic town centre and entice visitors with themed town tours that take them back to times gone by.
However, if you are more into glitz and glamour, you should rent an RV and drive to the Main metropolis of Frankfurt. Sightseeing and shopping in Germany's fifth largest city is an unforgettable experience.
Hanau is located only a few kilometres east of the Main metropolis Frankfurt and scores with an excellent location in terms of transport. The city is easily accessible for a holiday in Hanau by bus, train, S-Bahn and your own vehicle.
Germany's largest airport, Frankfurt Airport, is only about 40 kilometres away and very easy to reach. The city has several railway stations, of which the main station has international connections and, of course, offers a direct connection to Frankfurt Central Station, the second largest railway station in Germany. Those arriving by plane or train should rent a vehicle. In the immediate vicinity of Hanau, it is possible to rent an RV.
Although Hanau is not a stronghold of carnival, there is still a lot of celebration here, there is traditionally a big parade on carnival Saturday and the town hall is symbolically stormed by the "Jecken".
In June, the Lamboy Festival takes place every year. On 13 June 1636, the citizens celebrated the end of the siege by the Swedish general Lamboy in the 30 Years' War. Since then, this event has been commemorated every year, in the early years with thanksgiving services in St. Mary's Church, and later with a folk festival that takes place in the "Lambewald", the Lamboy grove.
Every autumn, the town celebrates the Civic Festival, and has been since 1958, when the first Civic Festival was first celebrated. For three days at the beginning of September, the beautiful, well-kept castle park directly on the Main behind Philippsruhe Castle opens its doors to art, culture, cheerfulness and Oktoberfest atmosphere.
Many petrol stations in Hanau are open around the clock, and the current lowest prices can be called up via the internet. In the affiliated shops, all those last-minute things can be purchased that are necessary for the trip but have unfortunately been forgotten so far. Even those who spontaneously decide to rent an RV will find attractive offers in and around Hanau.
