Holidays in your own country are becoming more and more popular. In particular, holidays with RV or camper are growing in popularity - and so is exploring Germany's most beautiful corners and renting a campervan. Why travel far afield? Rent a campervan and explore the beautiful surroundings of our country!
The city of Dresden is the capital of the Free State of Saxony and now offers around 560,000 inhabitants a home in the midst of beautiful natural areas. It is nestled between the foothills of the Osterzgebirge mountains and on both sides of the Elbe River - mostly in the Dresden Elbe Valley. The city is the fourth largest in Germany after Berlin, Hamburg and Cologne and offers countless possibilities with a campervan. The city limits are 139.65 kilometres long, of which the northern and north-eastern city area belongs to the Westlausitzer Hügel- und Bergland (West Lusatian Hills and Mountains).
The wonderful natural and cultural landscape stretches almost 20 kilometres through the city area, attracting more and more holidaymakers travelling with a rented campervan or camper. With around 63 percent forest and green areas, Dresden is one of the major cities in Europe with the highest proportion of plant life and therefore offers ideal conditions for campers! The Dresdner Heide in particular, which is the largest forest area with 5876 ha, contributes to this. Four large nature reserves and three great bird sanctuaries are located directly in the city area. Countless beautiful listed avenues, parks, gardens and also cemeteries are waiting to be discovered. Eleven landscape protection areas also ensure that nature is preserved and always attracts tourists out into the countryside.
Rent RV: Dresden offers ideal conditions for this as well as for combining nature with culture, because - in addition to the beautiful surroundings - there are numerous historical sights directly in the city, which provide you with interesting facts and give you new impressions of the past eras. Only a fraction of them are:
In addition to all these cultural treasures, many theatres and museums await you here, as well as the very special charm of the so-called "Florence on the Elbe" and the Saxon heart of science and business.
But the surrounding area also offers numerous possibilities and something for every taste. Far from the hustle and bustle of the city, there are numerous wonderful routes for travelling by campervan that will take you to the most beautiful corners of the area.
If you like to be active, you should definitely consider the Elbe Cycle Path. The approximately 25-kilometre-long cycle path takes you directly along the Elbe from the town of Meißen, which is famous for the oldest porcelain manufactory in Europe, to Dresden. A special highlight of the route is the Gohlis windmill, which awaits your visit. The nearby beer garden invites you to take a leisurely rest and recharge your batteries before continuing on your way towards Dresden.
But you don't necessarily have to have a destination in the vicinity of Dresden, because the Elbe itself, which as a Central European river rises in the Czech Republic and flows into the North Sea, is already an experience in itself. Only the Elbe drains Bohemia, which is enclosed by the low mountain ranges, to the North Sea. With an impressive length of around 1090 kilometres, it is the twelfth longest river in Europe and offers peace and relaxation on its banks. Rent a campervan in Dresden and then head out into nature! Explore the many beautiful paths along the Elbe and recharge your batteries for everyday life.
Just as perfectly accessible by bike or on foot is the beautiful Pillnitz Palace with its park. Built in the 18th century, the castle is located in the former village of the same name, which is now part of the city of Dresden. Here you can immerse yourself in the Baroque era, as in addition to the regular guided tours you can gain further impressions in the Palace and Arts and Crafts Museum located there. The enchanting, colourfully flowering and magnificent park invites you to linger afterwards. Your excursion is rounded off by six gastronomic offerings that will spoil you with culinary delights. From the opposite bank, the castle shows its most beautiful side, especially in the late afternoon hours.
If you prefer to explore the city of Dresden by campervan and enjoy a unique view at the same time, you should definitely visit the Brühlsche Terrasse. Here you get an unforgettable postcard backdrop, as your view falls directly on the city's most famous buildings. In particular, the Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) and the Elbe with the oldest paddle steamer fleet in the world offer you an experience in a class of its own!
Another highlight that you must not miss on your trip with the campervan is the Frauenkirche in Dresden. It looks back on a thousand years of history and was destroyed shortly before the end of the Second World War. A memorial still commemorates the terrible events of that time. The Frauenkirche has a lot to offer:
If you would like to discover the Frauenkirche on your own, you can turn to volunteer church guides who are ready and waiting with all your questions.
So, you quickly realise: plan enough time and enter a different world. Let the peace and quiet take effect on you and pause! We recommend a visit between Monday and Friday, because at the weekend the visiting times are reduced due to baptisms, weddings or church services.
As with all journeys - whether by plane, car or RV - it is helpful to gather some information about the destination and the journey itself. Dresden is easy to reach from all corners of Germany via the motorway. Many petrol stations as well as rest stops along the way make for relaxing breaks. There are no tolls on your way.
The city of Dresden also has an airport. The large main railway station as well as the well-developed local transport network also offer you an alternative for your journey. These two options also allow you to look for a suitable campervan on site. Renting a campervan in Dresden is simple and straightforward.
When you rent your RV in Dresden, it is essential that you check that sufficient safety is provided for before you start your journey - just as you would for an ordinary longer journey by car:
are only a small part of the RV equipment that you should have. Small kitchen or everyday helpers that you can add to your campervan will also make your holiday even more enjoyable. More detailed assistance and information on renting and equipping a campervan can easily be found on the Internet. Create optimal conditions for your perfect holiday: rent a campervan in Dresden, explore the surroundings, enjoy nature and experience unforgettable days!
If you like to be active on the road with your bikes, but don't have room on your campervan to transport them, you can easily rent bikes locally. There are numerous providers here who will allow you to rent and find the perfect bike for you.
