The Ardèche is a French département in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Although it isn't very populated, Ardèche welcomes many tourists every year. The many medieval villages, surrounded by hills, are a pleasure for historians and visitors alike. Here is a short list of places to explore:
-Mont Gerbier de Jonc: Your child may have seen it in geography books. It is one of the many volcanoes in the Ardèche and where the largest river in France, the Loire, rises. The nature reserve offers a dense flora and fauna and it isn't uncommon to see a falcon or vulture on a walk. -The Pont d'Arc: This isn't just any bridge, it's the symbol of the Ardèche. Around the bridge there are many hiking trails, surrounded by a beautiful flora and fauna.
-Villages with character: The historic and medieval villages of Aubenas, Antraïgues, Balazuc and Vogüé are among the most popular destinations. You can visit the castles and lose yourself in their winding alleyways, crossed by arcades.

The département's climate varies greatly, with cold crisp winters and hot mediterranean summers. Your can never be too sure what to expect. Water plays an important role in the Ardèche. The region is painted with many springs and rivers, the most famous of which is the Ardèche, which flows from Vallon Pont d'Arc through its spectacular gorges.
