Faro is located in the middle of the Algarve, the southernmost region of Portugal. Over 150 kilometres of coastline with fantastic beaches and unique rock formations are waiting to be explored by campervan. So rent a campervan in Faro and use the city as a starting point for your perfect camping holiday in Faro - whether for day trips or as a starting point for a road trip lasting several days.
Holidays in Faro are possible all year round. You can rent your campervan and easily adapt your program and focus on the appropriate season:
Holidays in Faro and the Algarve have become increasingly popular with campers in recent years. This has had a positive effect on the region's camping infrastructure, which is constantly being expanded and improved. When you rent your campervan in Faro, you have numerous campsites to choose from in fantastic locations to explore the area from one site, but also to plan round trips.
The expansion of camping facilities also plays an important role in the protection of the breathtaking nature, which has been increasingly endangered by wild camping with the campervan. This has been prohibited since 2020 and can be punished with fines of up to 600 euros. It is therefore advisable to take your campervan to one of the numerous official camping and parking areas and rent a pitch there.
Campervan hire in Faro and the city becomes the starting point for your unforgettable trip, because the city and the surrounding area offer something for everyone. Whether you want to enjoy the beautiful nature, let yourself be fascinated by the foreign culture during a stroll through the city or want to work off your energy with numerous sporting activities - here you will get your money's worth.
Faro
The city itself offers great sights:
The best way to explore the old town is on foot and to park your campervan in one of the car parks outside the city walls. This applies in all towns and villages in the Algarve, and it is advisable to find an official car park outside the old towns with their narrow, winding streets.
Faro is protected by an offshore natural barrier that is a nature reserve. The lagoon "Parque Natural da Ria Formosa" with its salt flats is a paradise for various bird species and is worth exploring - preferably by boat.
Albufeira
In Albufeira, which is located about 40 kilometres west of Faro, there is something for everyone:
Lagos
Lagos, with its well-preserved old town protected by ancient Arab walls, is located about 90 km west of Faro. It is one of the most famous towns in the Algarve, not least because the best beaches in the region are nearby:
Highlight: Ponta da Piedade - one of the most impressive and beautiful rock formations in the Algarve, which can be explored on foot or by boat.
Sagres
Sagres is located about 110 km from Faro at the westernmost tip of the Algarve and is known for its impressive nature, shaped by the rough Atlantic Ocean:
Tavira
30 kilometres east of Faro, the fishing village of Tavira lies quietly on a river. It has retained its charm to this day and tells an exciting story:
Silves
Silves is located in the Algarve hinterland about 60 kilometres from Faro. The former capital of the Algarve still exudes a magical charm today:
Learn about the region's agriculture (wine growing, almonds, citrus fruits) and cork industry.
Loulé
Somewhat inland and barely 20 kilometres from Faro is Loulé, where you can still find the original Portugal:
All in all, the most beautiful corners of the Algarve are close together, which is why day trips with the campervan from Faro or any other location of your choice are possible, but you can also plan an Algarve round trip with the campervan or continue the trip with a trip to the north.
Transport links make Faro an ideal place to rent a campervan:
Rent a campervan and from here you have numerous possibilities to start your journey on the well-developed road network. In order to fully appreciate the beauty of the landscape and to give yourself the opportunity to discover beautiful corners during your journey, the best option in the Algarve is to use the coastal roads, which are also easy to drive on in a campervan.
If you want to cover longer distances quickly, you can also use the motorway network, but you will have to pay a toll. Depending on the motorway, you can pay this at the payment points or electronically. If you rent a campervan, it is usually equipped with electronic transmitters. You will then be billed for the tolls when you return the campervan. Campervans are in vehicle class 2, which means a price per kilometre of about ten cents on toll roads.
Most petrol stations are open between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m., are also suitable for campervans and offer the usual types of fuel. The lowest fuel prices can be found at large supermarkets such as Jumbo and Intermarché, with prices similar to or even slightly higher than the German price level.
In response to many wild parkers and campers, parking and overnight stays with campervans are now only permitted in designated areas; violations can result in severe fines.
