Campervan hire prices
With a campervan you are free, independent and can plan your own holiday destinations. However, when planning your trip, you should also list the cost of the campervan, petrol, campsite costs and many other hidden factors, otherwise you will quickly reach the limits of your personal budget. Campervan holidays are not always cheap. It depends on whether you go out of season, in spring, summer, autumn or winter and how long you plan to be travelling. In winter, you have to take into account the cost of gas bottles for heating, and of course the campsites are usually cheaper then. Write down your budget, exactly what you want to spend and the different prices you would pay for the campsite, for food and for the campervan itself. A campervan holiday can be cheaper than a hotel and a flight or travelling by car, but it doesn’t have to be.
Various aspects to consider when taking a campervan holiday:
Renting a campervan: Price
– Type of campervan –
depends on the number of passengers, desired comfort, add-ons booked, …
The larger the campervan, the more expensive the rental prices. Of course, you will pay much more for an Alcove motorhome for 6 people than for a small campervan. On top of that, there is the cost of petrol. A campervan that is larger and heavier will consume more fuel on a campervan holiday than a smaller vehicle. There are also different prices on the ferries: The longer and larger the campervan, the more expensive the price on the ship. If a campervan weighs more than 3.5 tonnes, it is considered a lorry or bus and the ferry and campsite prices are more expensive than for the smaller campervans.
– Season –
Higher prices for campervan hire in summer, lower in winter
In summer, the price for a campervan holiday is often higher than in the months of the low season when children are not on holidays. Therefore, if you don’t have children with you, it’s better to start a campervan holiday during off-season, because that’s when it’s cheapest and the beaches and holiday regions are still quite empty. Once the summer holidays start, the country is overcrowded, especially in Italy, Spain and the like, and prices are much higher than in the early or late season. In winter, of course, it’s cheapest. If you buy enough gas bottles and take them with you, you can also heat the campervan optimally at less high temperatures.
– Country of rental –
The price of the rented campervan depends on the the country.
In countries like Poland or the Czech Republic, renting a campervan is cheaper than here in Germany. That’s no wonder, because everything is cheaper in these countries than in our consumer country. If you want to go to Iceland in the summer, for example, you can pay a rather high price for a campervan. If you plan to visit Iceland in winter, campervan rental is rather cheap. In Spain, Italy and France, campervans are most expensive from April to October. November to March, on the other hand, when it’s not too warm there and you often can’t swim, the prices go down. Prices are also adjusted depending on the season. In the Scandinavian countries there is usually a lot of snow in winter and it is bitterly cold. Of course, the prices are lower than in summer, when many people want to spend their campervan holidays here. This is because the sun only sets for a few hours and the nights are very bright here during the summer months.
The external costs of a campervan holiday that must also be taken into account:
– Campsite fees
Campsites should not be underestimated. If you want a high-quality stay, with cleaned toilets and maybe even a swimming pool, you will have to pay. One night costs around 30 euros, plus the cost of the campervan, which is around 100 euros per day.
– Costs for cleaning the campervan
The toilet and wastewater must be emptied regularly. If you are not staying at a campsite, disposing of wastewater and the chemical toilet is not included in the price. You have to pay for it yourself. On many campsites, the toilet can be emptied, but not the entire wastewater tank. You also need a permit for this. Wastewater must not be discharged into the ground, as this is environmental pollution and can quickly enter the groundwater.
– Costs for renting a campervan: Fuel (petrol, diesel, LPG, etc.)
Fuel has become very expensive again in recent months. Depending on how many kilometres you drive, refuelling is also expensive. These costs are added to the cost of a campervan holiday and should not be underestimated. A campervan can consume up to 12 litres, depending on its size even more.
– Cost of renting a campervan: Motorway tolls in many countries
If you are driving through Switzerland, Austria or Italy, you should not underestimate the tolls. There are vignettes for cars, but for campervans that are larger than cars, the toll is higher and must be paid directly on site. Then nothing can go wrong on a campervan holiday if all this is taken into account.
Winter and summer holidays – campervan hire prices for 4 people
If you travel through Finland by campervan for 8 days, you will pay approximately 1830 euros in summer and 1120 euros in winter. You can see that in winter the prices are lower. Campervan hire prices can vary greatly depending on the time period.
