Where naturism was “ennobled”
Story has it, that a king brought nudist tradition in Croatia. King Edward VIII visited the Croatian island of Rab in 1936 and obtained permission from local authorities to bath nude in the bay of Kandarola. He enjoyed his bath in the Adriatic Sea with Lady Simpson, who became his wife later on. Although considered unusual and immoral for the time being, his action nevertheless was the first milestone of nudism in the mediterranean country.
Despite this exception, nudism remained forbidden and was considered immoral. But people were not to be stopped and naked bathing soon became a common secret. Nudism therefore became as early as 1953 legal in designated areas across Croatia, turning the country into an attraction for naturists.
