You start the engine and your journey begins. Every day you have a new destination in mind. You want to spend your holiday spontaneously, independently and in the great outdoors.
This is what attracts you and numerous others on a motorhome trip. Every year millions of people decide to go on holiday with a motorhome. If you are travelling with your motorhome for the first time, it is better to be prepared.
Driving training before departure
For you, an adventure begins, especially when it is the first ride. Don’t worry, because very few people are used to driving such large vehicles. Therefore, it is advisable to not directly drive in city traffic, when doing your first drive with a motorhome. It is better to practice on a quiet parking lot. You should make sure that the motorhome is fully loaded. The reason for this is that the driving behaviour is significantly different than when it is empty with little weight. You will find it harder to see due to the size of the motorhome. You also have a larger curve radius. In addition, the braking behaviour is different from that of a car. When you have finished driving, there are other things to think about. We have put together a small checklist for you.
Check the technology of your motorhome:
- Check the tire pressure and check the tires for damage.
- Check the engine oil.
- Inspect the headlights, indicators and rear lights.
Also:
- Before you start, you should close and lock the drawers, cupboard doors, skylight and windows.
- Secure the blinds.
- Stow heavy and loose objects safely.
- If you have antennas, you should pull them down.
- Fix the room dividers.
- Close the storage compartments and secure them additionally if necessary.
- If you have containers of liquids in the cupboards, close them tightly and stow them neatly.
- Always remember to close the toilet slide.
- If your motorhome has an awning, retract it.
- It is extremely important that you turn off the gas, both on the gas cylinder and in the motorhome.
- Let the remaining gas escape from the pipe.
- The drawbar wheel/supports must be raised and secured.
- Empty the waste water tank and stow it safely.
- If necessary, fill up with fresh water.
- Close the motorhome door.
- Check the pitch or check at home if you have forgotten anything.
