The Dusseldorf Caravan Salon is the international trade fair dedicated to recreational vehicles and camping equipment. This year the fair was held from 27 August to 4 September. Visitors from all over the world were able to discover over 1,000 models of motorhomes and caravans. The trade fair, first held in 1966, takes place annually in Düsseldorf, Germany.
Every year, the exhibition offers exhibitors an ideal showcase to present their latest innovations. Visitors have the opportunity to discover the latest trends in the industry and to compare products. The trade fair is an important event for everyone in the industry. Over the years, the fair has established itself as one of the leading events for caravan and motorhome manufacturers. Campstar attended the trade fair this year, to find out more about what’s new in the industry and to gather some interesting facts. Here then, 5 insights into the Caravan Saloon Düsseldorf 2022:
1) ELECTRIC
Although their range does not yet make them truly attractive, electric motorhomes undoubtedly find ample space at the Caravan Salon.
Several models were shown at the Salon, including the E-Vanster from the German company Pössl, inspired by the Citroen Spacetourer. Or the Opel Zafira e-Life, a model developed by Crosscamp that will be on the market next year.
But the car that has certainly created the most amazement and curiosity is the ‘Beachy Air’, presented by caravan manufacturer Hobby.
It is a two-tone painted caravan with a folding roof (the height inside is 2.15 metres).
It is a very light vehicle as it weighs only 500 kilograms and can therefore be attached to many electric cars.
2) LUXURY MOTORHOMES
A large part of the fair was dedicated to luxury cars. The pavilion in question was number 5, the Premium pavilion, and presented several vehicles from the most famous and luxurious manufacturers such as Actros, Centurion, Excellence or Action Mobil.
The vehicle that caught the attention of many (if not all) was definitely the Performance S, on display at the Volkner Mobil stand. The vehicle in question is a double-decker bus, and can accommodate up to 55 people, has a range of around 500 km and can reach 150 km/h. The cost of this vehicle is EUR 2.5 million. The vehicle is equipped with a 90 kWh battery and can be recharged in about two hours. The vehicle was first presented at the International Camper Show in Parma in 2018 and has since received numerous awards. So far, only 10 examples of this model have been produced, six of which have already been sold.
This year, at the Caravan Saloon in Düsseldorf, the vehicle housed a Ferrari LaFerrari housed in the lower compartment, at a total cost of €5.3 million.
3) ORGANISATION OF THE HALLS
The Düsseldorf Caravan Salon was perfectly organised into sectors, which in turn were divided into pavilions.
They were:

More general section with the exhibits of the different brands from as many as 40 different countries
- Premium Hall
Already mentioned above, it presented the most luxurious and expensive vehicles
- Outdoor equipment and activities
Dedicated area for outdoor enthusiasts

- Beginners’ area

4) THE CARAVAN SALON STARTERWORLD
One of the most interesting things about the fair this year was definitely the beginners’ area:
Halls 7a and 7b were in fact set up precisely for those just approaching the world of caravanning, to allow everyone, even newcomers, to wander around the fair with more awareness and knowledge.
The pavilion was packed with various presentations with useful information for beginners, including rules on legal issues such as unloading and loading, overviews for choosing a vehicle, and trendy topics.
In addition, there was also an area where test drives of caravanning vehicles were possible.
Inexperienced visitors were able to try out different recreational vehicles and also received advice on how to choose the best vehicle for their needs. This year was definitely the year for beginners in caravanning.
5) NUMBER OF COUNTRIES INVOLVED
The countries involved this year reached record numbers and increased by 10% compared to last year. Overall, it was a very successful event involving many countries. In total, some 40 countries were involved, including Ukraine, Italy, Uganda, Australia and many others. The increase in the number of countries involved was certainly a success for the event.
In conclusion, we can say that the Caravan Salon was a unique experience for us, which allowed us to discover many new things and meet other experts in the field. We recommend this experience to everyone who is passionate about caravanning as it is extremely interesting and useful.
