Campgrounds between the North Sea and Ijsselmeer

The scenic and cultural provinces of North and South Holland extend along the west coast of the Netherlands from the island of Texel in the north to the delta of the Rhine, Meuse and Schelde in the south. In the northeast, the Ijsselmeer borders the region with Friesland. The flat land is partly below sea level. Camping guests will enjoy the wild nature of the sand dunes and the North Sea beaches, picturesque harbours and a rich cultural heritage in the historic towns.

While North Holland is home to the Netherlands capital, Amsterdam, the political centre of The Haugue, is located in South Holland. The Hague is home to the Dutch government, it hosts the International Court of Justice, one of the most important courts in the world and houses the rozal family at the Royal Palace Noordeinde. The tourist centre of Holland is the canal city of Amsterdam. On a tour of the city, there are countless museums, theatres, palaces and cultural-historical buildings to discover. The collection at the Rijk Museum, which includes Rembrandt's Night Watch, is particularly extensive. Other world-renowned museums included the Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank Huis. In addition to the other major centres, Amsterdam offers a huge range of shopping options. In the trendy district you can immerse yourself in a colourful nightlife. One of the most popular destinations in North Holland is the cheese market in Alkmaar, where cheese weels are weighed and traded in an old tradition.

At the Ijsselmeer, the ports of Hoorn, Enkhuizen or Medemblijk, bordered by winding gables of old merchant houses, represent the country's great tradition as a maritime nation. When embarking on a traditional flat-bottom ship, you can imagine what it was like to sail in the past. In contrast, the Netherlands is also home to the largest deep-water port in Europe, Rotterdam, which can be admired today by its huge ships. Campers can look forward to a mild Atlantic climate during their stay at a campground the Netherlands. The winters are mostly snow-free and with only a few days of frost on average in a year, camping is possible all year round. During the summer months, temperatures ranging from 20 to 25 degrees Celsius attract visitors to Dutch cities, countryside and sandy beaches.

No place is as Camping-friendly as the Netherlands

The Dutch are enthusiastic about camping like no other nation. Beach holidaymakers will find a suitable campground by the sea in one of the many seaside resorts, where they accommodate for types of camping: campervans, caravans and camping in a tent. Campgrounds nestled in green landscapes amidst the dense network of canals and lakes are ideal for cyclists and canoeing enthusiasts. City travelers around the metropolis can take advantage of an overnight stay at a campground. In the Netherlands, whatever you want, you can do it. If you want to stay in a tent in the middle of the sand dunes or visit one of the small classic campgrounds in North Holland, you an do it. For those with motorhomes, many of the pitches in all regions of Holland offer separate and secure pitches with a comprehensive range of services. Mobile homes can use both the infrastructure of the camp as well as their supply facilities. The campgrounds in Amsterdam are particularly popular with campers, due to a cheaper accommodation option and it's proximity to the cultural hub of the Netherlands. Many of the campgrounds have fully equipped tents or motorhomes, which are often used by those who want to enjoy the flair of a camping holiday without travelling with a caravan. Family-oriented campgrounds offer campers a variety of entertainment programmes, both for children and for the whole family. So even parents can relax without any disturbances. Excursions to the cities that are worth seeing can fill a whole holiday calendar in Holland. Some that we would recommend visiting, would be the port towns on the Ijsselmeer and of course a visit to the cheese town of Edam. They can all be reached pretty easily via the well-infrastructured and signposted bike lanes. Bicycles can be rented and repaired all over the country. Those who prefer to go hiking will find an excellent hiking area in the unique dune landscapes of the west coast. In summer, a hike through the sandy mountains or directly by the water can be combined with a swim in the North Sea. Children can also safely let off some steam on the shallow sandy beaches. If it snows in winter, the dunes are perfect for to go tobogganing, with some dunes reaching 50m high in Schoorl. North and South Holland are a year-round destination for campers of all kinds.
